New Music Equity Action meets as a large group on a weekly basis, in task forces on a freely scheduled basis, and communicates non-synchronous work primarily through slack.
If you would like to get involved, sign up for our mailing list above! We send out large group meeting notices through this list, and coordinate tasks forces on Slack.
If you're going to attend your first meeting, read the below for some information.
We meet as a larger group on a weekly basis on alternating Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET. This group is for general concerns, presentations, introducing new members, and sub-groups informing the full group about the work they are doing. Any member can sign up to lead the large group meeting.
Sub-groups, or task forces, meet on their own schedules and focus on certain issues. Some examples of task forces are dismantle, education, and social. These groups also work asynchronously through Slack, and Google docs.
New members are encouraged to come to large group meetings, and to join Slack and any sub-group fitting their interests. Don’t wait for permission, just jump right in and introduce yourself!
A member of NMEA signs up to lead a large group zoom meeting. Usually three people collaborate, with one leading the agenda, one moderating, and one keeping notes. The moderator will help lead the discussion via one of several approaches. Most often we use the progressive stack: anyone who wants to speak types Stack in the chat, and the moderator will order the requests as they come in, raising less privileged voices to the top of the queue. A round is also sometimes used, with each member speaking in turn around a circle. In smaller groups a free discussion also is used.
Current projects include development of a guide and pledge to anti-racist action by ensembles and performers, a mapping of the structures and interrelations of funders of new music, inviting consultants to give presentations to the group, inviting large funders to Q & A sessions, and letter writing campaigns to some granting organizations.
